NEW TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPMENT

MTB has assisted several companies with the development of new technologies.  In addition, several of our managers have been involved in designing, developing, and implementing plans and projects to apply new technologies for environmental remediation and/or brownfield redevelopment.  Some examples include:

Dredged Material Stabilization and Constructive Use:   MTB vice president Bill Spear developed a process and designed, fabricated, and operated necessary equipment to stabilize dioxin-contaminated dredge material in the New York / New Jersey harbor.  Ocean dumping of the material had been stopped by the governor of New Jersey.  Mr. Spear worked with the port authorities of both states, the governor’s office of New Jersey, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to offer an alternative to ocean dumping of the hazardous material.

The solution was to stabilize or encapsulate the dioxin with a proprietary process and use the stabilized material as engineered backfill for riverside redevelopment projects.  This project and follow-up work enabled both states as well as the Port Authority to continue to operate and perform necessary dredging activities consistent with the sediment control plan for the Hudson River.  It was estimated that the Port Authority of NY/NJ would have lost approximately $60 billion per year were it not for this process.

HarborGard Marine Pollution Control:  MTB managed the independent testing of a proposed device to control the migration of hydrocarbon pollutants from the bilges of water craft into surrounding waterways.  The testing proved to be very successful, and MTB compiled all testing information into a published report.
